Jason (head of sales) and Tommy (lead technician) came out to give us a quote on a mini-split system for the bedroom over the garage (always the hottest/coldest room in the house). They saw the room and said "Why do you want a mini-split when you already have two a/c vents in this room?" "Because this room is barely insulated and there is no airflow at this end of the house. It all gets diverted to the other rooms before it can make it this far." The a/c system was 29 years old and they noted that we were planning on spending thousands of dollars on a single room mini-split when the 29 year old central air system is on it's last legs and would probably need to be replaced shortly anyway. Their solution was to install a new Trane system (for about twice the price of the mini-split), run a dedicated trunk line straight to that room and use baffles to divert air as needed to the other rooms.
For the first time in 40 years, that room is comfortable without a space heater or portable air unit.
