Heat Pump Maintenance
Because a heat pump runs year-round, it benefits from two tune-ups a year — one before summer, one before winter — to protect efficiency and your warranty.
How a heat pump works (in plain English)
Instead of burning fuel, a heat pump moves heat. In summer it pulls heat out of your home like an air conditioner; in winter it reverses and pulls heat from the outside air into your home. That's why it's so efficient in our climate — and why a healthy heat pump can cut your heating bills compared to electric strip heat. When temperatures drop into the 30s, you may hear it run a defrost cycle or kick on backup "auxiliary" heat; that's normal, but if aux heat runs all the time, something needs attention.
Heat Pump FAQs
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?
A few reasons are normal: heat pumps deliver cooler-feeling air than a gas furnace, and they briefly blow cool air during a defrost cycle. But if it's blowing genuinely cold air, won't warm the house, or the outdoor unit is iced over, it needs service — often low refrigerant, a reversing-valve issue, or a defrost problem. Call us at (901) 262-5931.
Why is my heat pump icing up or frozen?
A light frost in cold weather is normal and the unit clears it with a defrost cycle. Heavy or constant ice means a problem — low refrigerant, a stuck defrost control, or airflow issues. Turn it to emergency heat and call us before running it iced, which can damage the compressor.
Why is my heat pump running constantly?
In very cold weather heat pumps run longer by design — that's normal and efficient. But constant running with poor heating can mean low refrigerant, a dirty filter or coil, a failing part, or that auxiliary heat is stuck on (which spikes your bill). We'll pinpoint it fast.
How long do heat pumps last?
Most heat pumps last about 12–15 years with regular maintenance — a bit less than a gas furnace because they run year-round. Past that, efficiency drops and repairs add up, so replacement often pays off.
Is a heat pump better than a furnace for our area?
For the Mid-South's mild winters, heat pumps are very efficient and give you heating and cooling in one system. In colder climates a gas furnace or a dual-fuel setup can make more sense. We'll help you choose what fits your home and budget.
How much does a new heat pump cost?
A new heat pump system typically runs from around $10,000 for a value setup up to $37,000+ for a large, high-efficiency variable-speed system, depending on size and efficiency. We size it correctly and give a free quote with financing and TVA rebate options.
Do you repair all heat pump brands?
Yes — we service and repair every major brand, and as a Trane Comfort Specialist we install high-efficiency Trane systems when it's time to replace.
