Getting Your Furnace Ready for a Tennessee Winter

By the Comfortable LLC team · August 21, 2026 · Heating

Our Mid-South winters are mild compared with up north, but they still bring a few hard cold snaps — and those cold nights have a way of finding every weak spot in a heating system. The best time to get your furnace ready is now, before the first real chill, while a technician's schedule is open and a small fix is still a small fix. Here's how to head into the season with confidence.

Start with the easy things

Pay attention to that first startup

A faint burning smell the first time you run the furnace each fall is normal — it's just dust burning off the heat exchanger, and it should clear within an hour. What isn't normal: a smell that lingers, short cycling (turning on and off rapidly), weak or cold air, banging or screeching noises, or a burner flame that's yellow or flickering instead of steady and blue. Any of those are worth a call before they turn into a no-heat night.

A quick safety word on gas heat. A gas furnace produces carbon monoxide, which is colorless and odorless. Make sure you have working CO detectors near the sleeping areas and test them every fall. If a detector ever sounds, or you feel headachy, dizzy, or nauseated when the heat is running, get everyone outside to fresh air and call for help — then have the system inspected before using it again. This is not a wait-and-see situation.

The part that really pays off: a fall tune-up

The most reliable way to avoid a mid-winter breakdown is a professional heating tune-up before the season starts. When we service a furnace, we're doing the things you can't easily do yourself — inspecting the heat exchanger for cracks (a safety issue), checking the burners and flame, testing safety controls, verifying airflow, and confirming the system is running efficiently. It's a small, planned expense that heads off the big, unplanned one. If you'd rather not think about it each year, our Comfortable Club maintenance plan keeps both your heating and cooling on a schedule automatically.

Don't forget your air

Winter means a sealed-up house and more time indoors, which is exactly when indoor air quality matters most. A fresh filter helps, but if anyone in the house deals with allergies or dry winter air, it's a good time to ask about better filtration or a whole-home humidifier.

When to call a pro

If your furnace won't start, only blows cold air, keeps short-cycling, trips a breaker, or makes a noise it didn't used to — don't keep forcing it. Those are signs of a real problem, and running a struggling furnace can turn a repair into a replacement. Our team handles furnace repair and replacement across the area, and we'll always tell you honestly whether a fix or a new system makes more sense for you.
